Parents have the most important job in the world. They must provide for and raise their children. While rewarding, raising children can be exhausting…both mentally and physically! By putting the needs of our kids first all the time, we often end up neglecting ourselves. However, we’re doing ourselves (and our children) a disservice when we don’t tend to our needs. Without adding self-care into our routines, we may start to develop mental and physical ailments that will make doing the ever-so-important job of being a parent more challenging. At the J, we make self-care for parents accessible. Here are some of the many ways parents in St. Louis can practice some self-care at the J!

Personal Training

Nothing puts the emphasis on self in self-care like personal training. Personal training is just that, personal. Others are used to you doing good things for them. Personal training is a moment to do something good for you by tending to your unique body and mind.

The J has nationally-certified trainers who can tailor personal training programs to help you meet your wellness goals, including:

  • Balance/Stability
  • Bodybuilding
  • Disease Management
  • Injury Prevention
  • Prenatal Fitness
  • Triathlon Conditioning
  • Special Accommodations
  • Sports performance
  • Weight Loss
  • And More!

Exercise doesn’t just get your body in shape. It helps shape your mind, too. Engaging in regular exercise releases endorphins, reduces stress, improves mood, boosts energy levels, and promotes better sleep, all of which contribute to a healthier and happier lifestyle!

Yoga

Having children can cause us parents to live a fast-paced life. Practicing yoga is the opportunity to slow things down and just “be.”

The term “yoga’ may conjure up ideas of super flexible people twirled up like a pretzel. While some people can do that, that’s not all that yoga entails. Yoga is accessible to all people, and the J provides an inclusive environment that encourages you to get on the mat and have some fun!

We offer four unique yoga programs to help you wherever you are in your journey:

  • Yoga for Beginners
  • Yoga (All Levels)
  • Yoga for Cancer
  • Private Yoga

Yoga is a powerful practice that can greatly contribute to self-care. It combines physical movement, breath control, and mindfulness, providing numerous benefits for overall well-being.

Used Book Sale & Book Festival

Children require a lot of our attention, and sometimes we just feel like we need a little escape. When we immerse ourselves in a good book, we enter a different world, allowing our minds to escape from daily stressors and worries.

Reading can be a form of relaxation, providing a much-needed break and an opportunity to recharge. At the J, we have plenty of opportunities to create the mental oasis you desire.

Join us for our Used Book Summer Sale from Sunday, August 27 – Thursday, August 31. With thousands of titles spanning various genres such as mystery, novels, biographies, and more, there’s something for every book lover. Proceeds from the sale go towards supporting the Cultural Arts Department. Volunteers and donations are welcome!

For two weeks in November, we also have The St. Louis Jewish Book Festival. This eagerly anticipated annual event has gained national recognition as one of the largest book festivals in the country, attracting over 10,000 attendees each year!

Swim Programs

Swimming is a low-impact exercise that provides a full-body workout, helping to improve cardiovascular health, build strength, and enhance flexibility. The J offers Private Swim Lessons for Adults that are appointment only. That way, you can find a time that works for your schedule.

Want to be with other adults and have conversations with someone around your age? Participating in Aquatics Group Exercise Classes or Group Lessons for Adults can provide opportunities for social interaction and connection with other people…that you don’t have to cook and clean for!

Taekwondo

One of the most fun aspects of self-care is trying something new. Taekwondo training focuses on discipline, self-control, and mental fortitude. It can help promote mental clarity, reduce stress, and enhance self-confidence and self-esteem…all while getting a good sweat on!

Learning self-defense skills through Taekwondo can empower individuals, increasing their sense of personal safety and security, all of which can improve one’s self-care. The J offers a Taekwondo class where you can acquire and further martial arts skills while acquiring strength and building a positive self-image.

Cycling

Get ready to pedal your way to self-care with the exhilarating and high-energy world of indoor cycling! Cycling isn’t just a workout; it’s a thrilling adventure that will leave you feeling empowered and energized.

The J offers Cycling Classes that use magnetic resistance Kaiser cycles that offer a smooth and customizable cycling experience, allowing riders to easily adjust the intensity levels to enjoy a more efficient and comfortable workout.

As the lights dim and the music cranks up, you’ll be transported into an immersive experience that is both invigorating and fun. Get ready to work every part of your body, from your legs to your abs, back, and hips, without any impact on your joints. It’s the perfect choice for those seeking a full-body training session that leaves no muscle untouched!
