RE:Treat allows participants to: \n\nExperience the joyous Judaism which is uniquely created in a camp setting\nConnect to their Jewish identities outside of traditional environments\nConnect with other Jews in their age groups\, creating a sense of belonging\n\nThis fall\, we plan to build on last year’s success and want YOU to join us. Spend the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah with your peers in a magical camp setting. Plans include Kabbalat Shabbat overlooking the lake\, alternative Shabbat morning service options\, killer kosher food\, laid-back afternoon camp activities\, and much more! \nWe’re excited to share that Carla Friend will be our Songleader again this year! Carla is the Founder and Executive Director of Tkiya\, an organization with the mission of creating joyful Jewish connections through participatory music experiences. She is a 2018 recipient of the Young Pioneers Award from the Jewish Education Project\, a 2019 recipient of 36 Under 36 from the Jewish Week\, is on the musical team for Temple of the Stranger\, and hosts a JKids Radio show called Tkiya Town. Carla has an album of family-friendly Jewish music called Challalalah\, and she writes Jewish music for adults as well. She is very excited to be back for round two of RE:Treat! \nCamp Sabra\nFriday\, September 8 – Sunday\, September 10\n$54/single\, $72/couple \nRegister as an Individual \nRegister as a Couple \nLast October\, we began this wonderful experience\, and after the weekend\, we heard loud and clear that we should do it again this year. DESCRIPTION:This event is a fun\, friendly\, simple Shabbat celebration for families with children of ALL ages. We will provide a kosher Shabbat dinner for all who attend. Grandparents\, friends\, Jewish or not– all are welcome. We will begin at 5:30 with an activity and schmoozing. Dinner and Shabbat blessings will be at 6 pm. We will be using the lower level of the Staenberg Family Complex. You can enter through either the ECC or Adult Day Center Doors (parking lot located behind the outdoor pool). Recent empty nesters can continue the fun with a private dinner at Sasha’s on Shaw. \nDaytime Delights\nIn the newly built Bayer Event Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden\, we will have live Hanukkah music beginning at 12:45pm with local musicians. SUMMARY:JBF Bookend: Rachel Beanland - "The House Is On Fire"
DESCRIPTION:The House Is On Fire tells the story of the 1811 Richmond Theater Fire from the perspective of four integrous characters—two Black and enslaved\, two white and imminently more protected—none of whom experience the world from a place of institutional authority. Set on the night after Christmas\, the place was packed as Placide & Green Company\, a touring ensemble with more than 30 members\, put on a play when a fire broke out backstage thanks to an oversight and some malfunctioning equipment. \nWith more than 600 people in attendance\, chaos ensued. Families and friends lost track of those they were with\, and many people died. Some members of the Placide & Green Company decided to hide their role in the accident and instead spread lies about rebelling slaves with torches being responsible. A hunt for those responsible and\, thankfully\, for the truth\, followed. \nModerated by Heather Fleming\, founder and director of the MO Equity Education Partnership (MoEEP) and the author of the book My Black Friend Says…: Lessons in Equity\, Inclusion\, and Cultural Competency. \nThis Martin Luther King Jr. Day program is in partnership with the Newmark Institute for Human Relations at the Jewish Community Relations Council of St. Louis.
