SUMMARY:Hidden History: A Memoir of Survival in Paris – An NJT "Prayer for the French Republic" Special Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join NJT for a conversation with Dr. Dorian Stuber about the book Rue Ordener\, Rue Labat\, which recounts philosopher Sarah Kofman’s experience hiding from the Nazis during World War II—a story set in similar circumstances as NJT’s production of Prayer for the French Republic. \nPhilosopher Sarah Kofman was born in Paris in 1934\, five years after her parents emigrated to France from Poland. She was only a child when her father\, a rabbi\, was arrested and deported to Auschwitz in July 1942. For the rest of the war\, Kofman and her mother found shelter with a former neighbor. Many years later\, Kofman wrote a memoir of her wartime experiences\, describing how she was saved—but also abused—by the non-Jewish woman she would come to call Mémé. The story is both unique to Kofman and representative of the French Jewish experience during WWII. \nThe event will be led by Dr. Dorian Stuber\, Emeritus Professor at Hendrix College and member of the Missouri Holocaust Education and Awareness Commission. \nParticipants are encouraged\, but not expected\, to read the book beforehand. More than seventy years after arriving in New York from WWII-torn Europe\, he is forgetting the stories that defined his life\, the life of his family\, and the lives of millions of Jews who were affected by Nazi terror. Observing this loss\, Jason vividly recalls the trip to Eastern Europe the two took together in 2001. As father and son travel from the town of Jay’s birth to the labor camp from which he escaped\, and to Auschwitz\, where many in his family were lost\, the stories Jason’s father has told all his life come alive. Each year\, the community comes together to celebrate connection\, honor the legacy of a visionary leader\, and support programs that bring hope\, education\, and strength to individuals and families facing hereditary cancers. \nAbout Lynnie’s Light\nLynn Isaacs Palan (Lynnie) was a pioneer and leader of both Nishmah: The St. Louis Jewish Women’s Project and Sharsheret Supports STL\, from which The Hamsa Wellness Community evolved. Through her passionate volunteerism and professional work in these organizations and many others\, she was dedicated to building vibrant communities and changing lives\, especially for individuals living with\, or at increased genetic risk of developing cancer. Lynnie lost her battle to breast cancer on April 10\, 2018\, leaving a legacy of philanthropy among her family\, friends\, and the entire St. Louis community.
