These days\, she finds herself embracing the mantra “when the going gets tough\, the cooking gets easy.” Pandemics\, wars\, and the busy pace of a very full life have led her toward a smoother\, more streamlined cooking approach embodied in the Hebrew word for quick\, zariz\, in her newest cookbook\, Zariz: 100 Easy\, Breezy\, Tel Aviv-y Recipes (Avery; On-sale April 28). \nThis pared-down style doesn’t mean sacrificing the rhythms\, sounds\, and sensory pleasures we experience while preparing vibrant\, yet simple recipes. Instead\, it has led her to rely on fewer pots and pans\, a more edited pantry of highly versatile ingredients to create maximum flavor\, and simple\, thoughtful techniques that bring meals together effortlessly—always with her signature\, flavor-forward style. \nMost of the recipes in this cookbook contain fewer than 12 ingredients—not including olive oil\, salt\, pepper\, and lemons\, which are staples of Adeena’s Middle Eastern & Mediterranean-inspired dishes\, and already in most pantries. Recipes include: \n\nSunny Sheet Pan Shakshuka\nBaharat-Spiced Mushroom Hummus\nGorgeous Green Salad with Labaneh-Lime Dressing\nHachapuri Pizza\nSpice-Drawer Schnitzel\nPreserved Lemon\, Asparagus\, & Cherry Tomato Orzotto\nGrilled Hoisin-Harissa Lamb Chips & Plums with Herb Salad\n\nAbout the Author\n \nAdeena Sussman is the New York Times bestselling author of Shabbat and Sababa. SUMMARY:Books & Bagels with Jason Sommer\, Author of "Shmuel's Bridge"
DESCRIPTION:Have brunch with the Jason Sommer\, local author of Shmuel’s Bridge: Following the Tracks to Auschwitz with My Survivor Father\nWe’re excited to welcome St. Louis author Jason Sommer to Books & Bagels\, the J’s literary brunch and learn series where great conversation\, local authors\, and fresh bagels come together for a meaningful mid-morning break. \nJason Sommer’s father\, Jay\, is ninety-eight years old and losing his memory. More than seventy years after arriving in New York from WWII-torn Europe\, he is forgetting the stories that defined his life\, the life of his family\, and the lives of millions of Jews who were affected by Nazi terror. Observing this loss\, Jason vividly recalls the trip to Eastern Europe the two took together in 2001. As father and son travel from the town of Jay’s birth to the labor camp from which he escaped\, and to Auschwitz\, where many in his family were lost\, the stories Jason’s father has told all his life come alive. So\, too\, do Jason’s own memories of the way his father’s past complicated and impacted Jason’s own inner life. Shmuel’s Bridge shows history through a double lens: the memories of a growing son’s complex relationship with his father and the meditations of that son whom\, now grown\, finds himself caring for a man losing all connection to a past that must not be forgotten. \nProgram\n10am Doors Open & Brunch Served:\n11am–Noon Author presentation \nFeatured Author Jason Sommer\nFrom a family of refugees and survivors\, Jason Sommer is drawn to story.
