SUMMARY:Hidden History: A Memoir of Survival in Paris – An NJT "Prayer for the French Republic" Special Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join NJT for a conversation with Dr. Dorian Stuber about the book Rue Ordener\, Rue Labat\, which recounts philosopher Sarah Kofman’s experience hiding from the Nazis during World War II—a story set in similar circumstances as NJT’s production of Prayer for the French Republic. \nPhilosopher Sarah Kofman was born in Paris in 1934\, five years after her parents emigrated to France from Poland. She was only a child when her father\, a rabbi\, was arrested and deported to Auschwitz in July 1942. For the rest of the war\, Kofman and her mother found shelter with a former neighbor. Many years later\, Kofman wrote a memoir of her wartime experiences\, describing how she was saved—but also abused—by the non-Jewish woman she would come to call Mémé. The story is both unique to Kofman and representative of the French Jewish experience during WWII. \nThe event will be led by Dr. Dorian Stuber\, Emeritus Professor at Hendrix College and member of the Missouri Holocaust Education and Awareness Commission. \nParticipants are encouraged\, but not expected\, to read the book beforehand. Books are available through the Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum gift shop. \nSpecial thanks to the Rubin and Gloria Feldman Family Educational Institute for its support of NJT events that are designed to provide context for the production of Prayer for the French Republic. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Adeena Sussman: A Jewish Book Festival & Speaker Series Event
DESCRIPTION:Zariz: 100 Easy\, Breezy\, Tel Aviv-y Recipes\nby Adeena Sussman\nModerated by Rachel Holtzman \nJ Member Ticket Pricing: \n$48.64 per couple (includes fees and 1 copy of the cookbook) \nNon-Member Ticket Pricing: \n$48.64 per attendee (includes fees and 1 copy of the cookbook)\n$64.86 per couple (includes fees and 1 copy of the cookbook) \nBook Festival All-Access Pass Holders: \nAdmission is included in your pass (cookbook may be purchased separately at the event) \nBUY TICKETS \nFor Adeena Sussman\, the kitchen is an island of calm: a place where she can center her mind\, set the rules\, and create a daily haven of deliciousness through her cooking. These days\, she finds herself embracing the mantra “when the going gets tough\, the cooking gets easy.” Pandemics\, wars\, and the busy pace of a very full life have led her toward a smoother\, more streamlined cooking approach embodied in the Hebrew word for quick\, zariz\, in her newest cookbook\, Zariz: 100 Easy\, Breezy\, Tel Aviv-y Recipes (Avery; On-sale April 28). \nThis pared-down style doesn’t mean sacrificing the rhythms\, sounds\, and sensory pleasures we experience while preparing vibrant\, yet simple recipes. Instead\, it has led her to rely on fewer pots and pans\, a more edited pantry of highly versatile ingredients to create maximum flavor\, and simple\, thoughtful techniques that bring meals together effortlessly—always with her signature\, flavor-forward style. \nMost of the recipes in this cookbook contain fewer than 12 ingredients—not including olive oil\, salt\, pepper\, and lemons\, which are staples of Adeena’s Middle Eastern & Mediterranean-inspired dishes\, and already in most pantries. Recipes include: \n\nSunny Sheet Pan Shakshuka\nBaharat-Spiced Mushroom Hummus\nGorgeous Green Salad with Labaneh-Lime Dressing\nHachapuri Pizza\nSpice-Drawer Schnitzel\nPreserved Lemon\, Asparagus\, & Cherry Tomato Orzotto\nGrilled Hoisin-Harissa Lamb Chips & Plums with Herb Salad\n\nAbout the Author\n \nAdeena Sussman is the New York Times bestselling author of Shabbat and Sababa. She cooks and writes from her kitchen in Tel Aviv\, where she lives in the city’s Carmel Market neighborhood with her husband\, Jay Shofet. \nSee more at: \nIG: @adeenasussman (257k)\nTikTok: @adeenasussman (20K)\nwww.adeenasussman.com \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Books & Bagels with Jason Sommer\, Author of "Shmuel's Bridge"
DESCRIPTION:Have brunch with the Jason Sommer\, local author of Shmuel’s Bridge: Following the Tracks to Auschwitz with My Survivor Father\nWe’re excited to welcome St. Louis author Jason Sommer to Books & Bagels\, the J’s literary brunch and learn series where great conversation\, local authors\, and fresh bagels come together for a meaningful mid-morning break. \nJason Sommer’s father\, Jay\, is ninety-eight years old and losing his memory. More than seventy years after arriving in New York from WWII-torn Europe\, he is forgetting the stories that defined his life\, the life of his family\, and the lives of millions of Jews who were affected by Nazi terror. Observing this loss\, Jason vividly recalls the trip to Eastern Europe the two took together in 2001. As father and son travel from the town of Jay’s birth to the labor camp from which he escaped\, and to Auschwitz\, where many in his family were lost\, the stories Jason’s father has told all his life come alive. So\, too\, do Jason’s own memories of the way his father’s past complicated and impacted Jason’s own inner life. Shmuel’s Bridge shows history through a double lens: the memories of a growing son’s complex relationship with his father and the meditations of that son whom\, now grown\, finds himself caring for a man losing all connection to a past that must not be forgotten. \nProgram\n10am Doors Open & Brunch Served:\n11am–Noon Author presentation \nFeatured Author Jason Sommer\nFrom a family of refugees and survivors\, Jason Sommer is drawn to story. He is the author of five poetry collections\, earning a number of honors\, including an Anna Davidson Rosenberg Award for poems about the Jewish experience and a reading at “Speech and Silence: Poetry and the Holocaust” at the National Holocaust Memorial Museum.
